The signs were scattered across the Basin in a semi-random order. Approaching the location, communications went dark.

No one can say for sure what happened. There was an appearance in the sky and ancient defences sprang automatically to life as they engaged the unknown entity.
-
The Interception left behind massive magnetic disturbances. Everything around was twisted, sky included. And in the middle of it all, stood the first Old One … Something changed, but no one could tell exactly what.

The first Old One
-
We came across the other Old One on the side of the road, as storm clouds were gathering above the desert. Although there was no immediate threat, everyone felt uneasy, as if being in dissonance with the world around us.

In the past hours desert rainfall has exceeded the yearly amount. In place of dust and salt crusts, there is now mud, flash floods and ephemeral lakes.
-
From behind the washed-out dust, the badlands began to show a diverse, unearthly spectrum of colours. Were they like this all the time? No one could seem to remember… With communications still offline, we were wandering through places remotely familiar and alien in the same time.
-
There used to be life here, but now there is desert again. Sand is creeping everywhere: in our mouths, eyes, ears, clothes and gear. With the last traces of water slowly fading, we recognised the place again for what it truly was …

At interception place, behind the ancient defences, the valley was engulfed in a fiery glow as dust conquered it back. And with the last speck of dust falling into place, communications came back on-line.
The Paradox
| 10 imagesShowcased at the ‘Kunst in ‘t Kasteel’ exhibition in 2019, this series of 10 photographs from Death Valley tells a story about how it feels to be amazed and out of place in the same time, when faced with something bigger and different than oneself.
It was my first experiment of telling a story, slightly under the influence of Tarkovsky’s Stalker, and is best experienced by reading the photo captions in order.
